igus (East Providence, RI) is offering an energy tube for the machine-tool industry that is nearly 100 percent chip-proof, according to the company. The RX energy tube ensures debris simply falls off due to its smooth domed outer contour. In addition, internal testing has confirmed that the energy tube is nearly 100 percent airtight. Despite its design, the RX can be easily opened using a screwdriver to unscrew the bolts integrated into the outer radius of each link, and a large interior space can be separated using vertical separators and a horizontal shelf to safely route cables and hoses. A high-temperature version, built using the “igumid HT” material, can survive red-hot chips up to 1,562°F.
