Coke Partners With Startup To Develop Bioplastic Material

A newly announced partnership between Coca-Cola and a New Jersey startup aims to develop soda bottles partly from carbon dioxide.

A newly announced partnership between Coca-Cola and a New Jersey startup aims to develop soda bottles partly from carbon dioxide.

The technology development agreement would accelerate the efforts of Liquid Light Corp., which pioneered a low-energy catalytic electrochemistry process to break carbon dioxide into multi-carbon chemicals.

The process can convert the inexpensive and abundant gas into mono-ethylene glycol, a component used to make Coke's plant-based plastic bottles.

Liquid Light hopes to increase the sustainability of companies that use plastic and provide a potential use and revenue source for operations, like ethanol plants, that produce carbon dioxide.

Details of the agreement were not disclosed.
