ST. LOUIS (AP) — A power outage at a St. Louis wastewater treatment plant is blamed for causing about 3.5 million gallons of untreated wastewater to flow into the Mississippi River.
The outage occurred Wednesday at the Bissell Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District says two of the three power feeds failed about 12:15 p.m., causing a discharge that was halted about 90 minutes later.
MSD officials say the discharge poses minimal risk to human health and safety or to the environment.
The discharge was reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, which is required by law.
