Two Massachusetts manufacturing facilities have agreed to pay $250,000 and make improvements after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said they violated clean water laws.
The EPA said a facility in Worcester and another in Norwood had improperly discharged stormwater and contaminated groundwater, and that the Norwood facility also released harmful amounts of oil into the Neponset River.
The plants house four subsidiaries of Saint-Gobain Corp., a multinational building materials company based in France. A spokeswoman said the company is working to fix all problems.
The EPA's New England office said the facilities settled the claims by paying a total of $250,000 in penalties and by promising to complete environmental projects totaling $200,000.
Curt Spalding, the office's regional administrator, said the settlement will help protect New England's waterways and natural environment.
