PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim Chemicals Inc. is closing one of its production facilities in Petersburg.

The company says the Synthesis 1 facility will be closed in mid-2013. The shutdown will occur gradually and could affect 80 to 100 workers.

Synthesis 1 is the company's original facility in Petersburg. Two other production facilities in Petersburg will remain open.

Boehringer Ingelheim Chemicals cited the facility's age and the company's future capacity needs.

The Progress-Index (https://bit.ly/OzF93X ) says the company announced the closure Saturday.

The company says it will help workers affected by the facility's closure.

The company is a member of the Boehringer Ingelheim group of companies based in Ingelheim, Germany.
