Kanwalinder Singh to Head Business Development, New Markets at Qualcomm Chipset Division
– July 21, 2011 – Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), a leading developer and innovator of advanced wireless technologies, products and services, announced today that it has appointed Kanwalinder Singh to head Business Development, New Markets for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT). In this role, Singh will focus on growing Qualcomm’s cellular chipset business in the machine-to-machine (M2M) space, with initial focus on Smart Automotive and Smart Energy. He will be responsible for relationships and business development in these domains, solutions development with Qualcomm’s chipset customers and partners, and chipset and reference design roadmaps. He will be based in San Diego, California and will report to Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president and group president, Qualcomm.
“Over the past seven years, Kanwalinder has established Qualcomm’s successful business operations in India and created substantial growth for Qualcomm’s CDMA, WCDMA and LTE businesses in the region,” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president and group president, Qualcomm. “His proven experience in developing new opportunities will be of tremendous value as he steers expansion of QCT’s business beyond handsets and computing.”
Singh joined Qualcomm in 2004 as president of Qualcomm India and South Asia. He was instrumental in bringing a focus on emerging regions to enable affordable sub-$20 CDMA handsets and sub-$25 EV-DO/HSPA wireless broadband devices. 3G auctions in India, which led to WCDMA/HSPA deployments in 2010, was a highlight during his tenure. Under Singh’s leadership, Qualcomm made a winning bid in India’s BWA auction in 2010 to secure top markets, including Delhi and Mumbai, and established LTE TDD as the compatible roadmap for EV-DO and HSPA operators in India. He will continue playing a significant role in Qualcomm’s LTE Venture in India where Qualcomm is on track to attract operator partner(s) for LTE TDD deployment, and then to exit the venture.
Singh extended Qualcomm’s partnerships beyond operators to the Open Market and private brands in India and championed commercialization of the CDMA Open Market Handset (OMH) initiative. He also developed successful ecosystem relationships and expanded Qualcomm Ventures’ portfolio to India with strategic investments in Apalya and MapMyIndia. Between 2000 and 2004, Singh was chief technical officer with Lucent Technologies India Ltd. Prior to that, he held various technical and managerial positions in Bell Laboratories and product units over an 11-year tenure at Lucent Technologies in New Jersey.
