A worker injured in a southwestern Illinois propane explosion last week has died.

Thirty-nine-year-old James Smith of Alton died Sunday at a suburban St. Louis hospital of injuries sustained six days earlier in the explosion in Jerseyville.

Police have said Smith was pumping propane into a storage tank near the Updike's Jerseyville Gas Service when the blast happened, damaging three homes and leaving him severely burned.

Three homes were damaged in the blast.

Police suspect a leaking hose caused the explosion. Officials with the state fire marshal and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

Jerseyville is about 40 miles north of St. Louis.
