Worker Injured In Plant Explosion Dies

One of four workers injured in a flash fire at a southern Kentucky charcoal plant has died.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- One of four workers injured in a flash fire at a southern Kentucky charcoal plant has died.

The Fayette County Coroner said 42-year-old Jerry King had burns over 60 percent of his body. The coroner's office pronounced King dead at 1:35 p.m. EDT Thursday.

The University of Kentucky Hospital listed three other workers, Dana Mayrand, Gayson Roberts and Jamie Dancy, in serious condition.

The four men suffered burns, as well as internal injuries from inhaling heated air and gases, when the fire erupted Friday at the Kingsford charcoal plant near Burnside. The plant makes charcoal briquets.

Plant manager Tom Burkenpas has said a spark apparently ignited a small pile of particle-size charcoal, causing a flash fire. Authorities say the four men were using torches and welding equipment to repair a conveyor when the fire broke out.
