Lincoln County authorities have released the name of a driver who died in the crash of his tanker truck hauling gasoline on U.S. Highway 83 north of North Platte.

He was identified Tuesday as 44-year-old Donald Toof, of Chadron.

Sheriff Jerome Kramer says the truck hit a guardrail on the east side of the North Platte River bridge Monday, went over the embankment and rolled onto its back.

Kramer says rescue workers tried to remove Toof from the wreckage, but he died before they could free him.

Authorities say the tank trailer ruptured, spilling thousands of gallons of gas. Three firefighters who waded into the gas were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Foam and water were sprayed on the wreckage to hold down fumes and prevent fire.
