Vestas Wind Systems is officially celebrating the opening of its new Colorado factory with a visit from Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Salazar's visit Tuesday at the wind tower factory in Pueblo is the first stop on his national renewable energy tour.

The Danish wind turbine manufacturer's factory in Pueblo is nearly 13 million square feet. The main production building covers the equivalent of nine football fields.

In Colorado, Vestas also has a blade factory in Windsor, an engineering center in Louisville, and a plant in Brighton that assembles nacelles. Another blade factory is set to open next year in Brighton. They employ about 1,400 people, including more than 400 in Pueblo.

Salazar also plans visits to California and Nevada.
