IBM To Celebrate 100 Years In Business

One of the largest companies in the world is celebrating a century in business on Thursday.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (AP) -- One of the largest companies in the world is celebrating a century in business, including a party at its facility in the Research Triangle Park.

IBM turns 100 on Thursday. Employees and retirees are scheduled to celebrate the occasion at the firm's RTP campus, with about 500 former workers returning to tell their stories of working for Big Blue in North Carolina.

IBM's North Carolina operation is responsible for a number of innovations, most famously the Universal Product Code. Commonly known as the "bar code," the tracking system made its first appearance in 1973 and changed the entire retail industry.

The company is also marking its century in business with a number of volunteer projects. IBM plans to announce at least one project in all of North Carolina's 100 counties.
