Ex-Whirlpool Plant Gets New Occupant

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- A former Whirlpool refrigerator factory in Evansville is getting its first new occupant, a plastics manufacturer.

Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool Corp. closed the factory in 2009, eliminating 1,100 jobs. Whirlpool shifted the work to Mexico.

The Evansville-Vanderburgh Area Planning Commission on Monday approved plans for part of the factory site.

The Evansville Courier & Press says at least 20 people will work at the plant, which will mold plastic pellets into a variety of products. It's unclear how much of the site the company will occupy.

On April, 1, the real estate developer the Kunkel Group said it was buying the site for $2.9 million and separating it into two parcels.

Whirlpool's product development center still occupies the rest of the facility and employs about 300 people.
