Amkor Japan Facility Suffers Minor Quake Damage

Provider of semiconductor assembly and test services said a manufacturing facility suffered minor damage as a result of the massive earthquake.

CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) -- Amkor Technology Inc., which provides semiconductor assembly and test services, said Thursday that a manufacturing facility suffered minor damage as a result of the massive earthquake in Japan.

Amkor also said it is too early to know what the broader effects of the earthquake will be on the electronics industry and on the company.

The company said there have been no reports of injuries to employees at the plant in Kitakami, which is about 260 miles northeast of Tokyo.

Amkor's Kitakami facility is closed due to power supply interruptions, and the company said it is making plans to re-open once power, gas, water and transportation systems are stable.

The company said the facility serves only a few Japan-based customers. "We are working closely with these customers to assess and support their requirements in light of the earthquake's impact on their operations," Amkor said in a statement.

The company said it works with multiple suppliers from different regions to help mitigate disruptions from disasters like the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
