Dow Chemical To Invest $100M For Efficiency

Chemical company said it will invest $100 million in its operations to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency.

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) -- Dow Chemical Co. said it will invest $100 million in its operations to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency.

The chemical, agricultural and manufacturing conglomerate said Monday it will invest the money in its business units that present the best plans for cutting energy use and emissions.

Dow is choosing from a group of 60 proposals that have been submitted by various business units. Taken together, the 60 plans would cost more than $500 million to implement and would cut nearly 8 trillion British Thermal Units, or BTUs, of energy use and eliminate over 400,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Dow makes more than 5,000 products at 188 sites in 35 countries. Shares of the company rose 37 cents to $36.69 during midday trading.
