Schuff Steel To Open Wind Tower Plant In Kansas

Company plans to build a wind tower manufacturing plant in Ottawa, which would eventually bring 200 to 250 jobs to the northeast Kansas town.

OTTAWA, Kan. (AP) -- Schuff Steel says it plans to build a wind tower manufacturing plant in Ottawa, which would eventually bring 200 to 250 jobs to the northeast Kansas town.

The company says the plant could eventually produce 300 wind towers a year.

The Lawrence Journal-World reported Monday that Schuff Steel is the fourth company to bring wind manufacturing plans to the state since Siemens Energy announced in May 2009 that it would build a wind turbine production plant in Hutchinson.

Schuff, a steel fabrication company, already has a plant in Ottawa.

Dennis Randall, executive vice president of Schuff's Midwest Division, says the new plant will be built at the current Ottawa plant site and most of the jobs will be filled by regional workers.
