Hartford City Parts Plant Closing

An eastern Indiana factory making plastic car door handles will close this year, putting more than 200 people out of work.

HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (AP) -- An eastern Indiana factory making plastic car door handles will close this year, putting more than 200 people out of work.

Northville, Mich.-based Key Plastics LLC said Thursday it will move work from its Hartford City plant 15 miles north of Muncie to other North American factories. The Star-Press of Muncie says the closing is expected by August.

The 17-year-old plant employs 184 people full-time and 30 others part-time, making it Blackford County's third largest employer. In July, Key said it would invest $1.2 million in new equipment at Hartford City plant and hire 24 people.

Blackford County Economic Development Corp. Executive Director Rob Cleveland says the closing will likely be the community's biggest economic loss since an Overhead Door factory closed in 2000, costing Hartford City 200 jobs.
