MEXICO CITY (AP) -- President Felipe Calderon says Mexico is becoming a leader in auto production, as he inaugurated a new Chrysler engine plant in the northern city of Saltillo.
The new $570 million plant will employ 700 people and produce the company's Pentastar V-6 engine for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and later for the Town and Country 300 and 200, the Dodge Charger, Avenger, Durango and Journey.
The plant will have a production capacity of about 400,000 units per year.
The company named the new facility the Centenario engine plant, in honor of the anniversary of the start of Mexico's 1910-1917 Revolution.
Chrysler Vice president Scott Garberding said the 290-HP Pentastar engine is 7 percent more fuel-efficient.
