SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Levi Strauss and Co., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., The Gap Inc., Hanesbrands Inc., Gildan Activewear Inc. and Nordstrom Inc. garnered top scores for safe workplaces in a survey of U.S. clothing and retail companies by corporate responsibility group As You Sow.

The survey of 33 of the largest clothing and retail companies is designed to provide information on the scope of programs to improve factory working conditions. Companies completed the survey to measure factors such as auditing, accountability and transparency at its factories. Of those surveyed, 18 did not respond.

Based on those results, As You Sow said several major brands are using an impressive amount of resources to make sure working conditions are safe but many others are lagging.
