Printpack To Close Indiana Factory

Indiana factory that makes plastic packaging for baked goods and other food products will close its doors by next fall, costing about 220 workers their jobs.

GREENSBURG, Ind. (AP) -- A southeastern Indiana factory that makes plastic packaging for baked goods and other food products will close its doors by next fall, costing about 220 workers their jobs.

The Greensburg Daily News reports that Atlanta-based Printpack announced Tuesday that its Greensburg plant would close by September 2011. Vice president of technology and support Terry Harper said about 150 workers would be laid off by Jan. 20, leaving about 70 employees to clear out inventory and fill remaining orders until the doors close.

Harper blamed the recession for the decision to close the plant and said Printpack had to choose between the older Greensburg site and a printing plant it opened last year in Bloomington. Printpack still operates 20 plants in the U.S. and a handful overseas.
