4 Hurt In Blast At Ky. Charcoal Plant

Authorities in Kentucky say an explosion at a Kingsford Charcoal plant has injured four people, of which three were airlifted to hospitals for treatment.

BURNSIDE, Ky. (AP) -- Authorities in southern Kentucky say an explosion at a charcoal plant has injured four people.

The Pulaski County sheriff's office said the explosion occurred shortly before noon Friday at the Kingsford Charcoal Plant, just south of Burnside.

Larry Wesley, chief deputy with the sheriff's office, says three people were airlifted to hospitals to be treated. Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital spokeswoman Susan Wilson says the other injured worker was being treated for burns there.

Authorities did not know the extent of damage to the plant or what caused the explosion. Wesley says the employees were working in an area of the plant where charcoal was housed in a tank.

Burnside is about 85 miles south of Lexington.
