MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) -- Dow Chemical Co. said Thursday it has signed a deal with major Japanese trading house Mitsui & Co. to build and operate a new membrane chlor-alkali facility located on the Texas coast.
The agreement is a 50-50 joint venture. The facility will be built at Dow's manufacturing complex in Freeport, Texas, south of Galveston.
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter.
The new facility is expected to begin operating in mid-2013, and will have a capacity of approximately 800 kilotons per annum.
Most of Dow's chlor-alkali production is used to serve its business units including residential and commercial building, automotive, electronic materials and agricultural sciences.
