Power Cut Disrupts Corning LCD Glass Factory

Corning said its LCD glass factory in Taichung, Taiwan, lost power over the weekend, which it expects will have a 'material' effect on production in fourth quarter.

CORNING, N.Y. (AP) -- Corning Inc. said Monday that its LCD glass factory in Taichung, Taiwan, lost power over the weekend, which it expects will have a "material" effect on production in the fourth quarter.

Corning said fourth-quarter glass production could match that of the third quarter or be down slightly. Before the outage, it had expected an increase of as much as 5 percent.

The outage shut down several glass melting tanks. The company is determining how much glass melting capacity was affected and how long it will take to repair the tanks. It will be several days before the full extent of the disruption is known, the Corning-based company said. Most of the production capacity is still intact.

Corning said it will provide more detail on the problems when it releases third-quarter financial results next Monday.

Corning shares fell 7 cents to $15.30 in morning trading.
