BMW’s South Carolina Plant Celebrates 15 Years

Automaker’s plant has grown from 600 employees in 1994 to about 5,000 workers, but celebration comes only weeks after BMW offered voluntary separation packages to its workers.

GREER, S.C. (AP) -- BMW is celebrating 15 years of making vehicles at its South Carolina production facility.

BMW Manufacturing Co. is holding a celebratory reception Tuesday at the BMW Zentrum in Greer.

The plant has grown from 600 employees in 1994 to about 5,000 workers.

But the celebration comes several weeks after the company offered voluntary separation packages to some of its workers in Greer as part of the automaker's plan to cut its work force by about 8,000 worldwide.

The company had said early last year it would also plan to add about 500 jobs in Greer as part of the $750 million expansion, originally targeted to be completed in about four years.
