Cummins Consolidates Filter Plants

Cummins Filtration consolidating 'significant' portion of its North American filter assembly operations, meaning the loss of about 400 jobs.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Cummins Filtration has announced plans to move 400 jobs at its Lake Mills plant to a factory in Mexico.

The division of diesel engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. announced Tuesday its oil and fuel filter assembly operations in Lake Mills will be moved to San Luis Potosi, Mexico, beginning in November.

Cummins executive Rich Freeland says the decision to move the jobs came as a result of the filtration industry becoming increasingly price sensitive and a recent reduction in demand. According to the company, demand for Cummins Filtration products declined 37 percent during the second quarter.

Officials say 400 workers at the plant in Winnebago County will lose their jobs between November 2009 and March 2010. Other operations at the Iowa plant, and about 110 people that run those operations, will remain.
