RV Supplier Shifting Production From Sweden To U.S.

Dometic Corp. will spend at least $9 million on equipment for a factory in Elkhart, Ind., and plans on hiring about 240 people as it shifts some production from Sweden.

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) -- A recreational vehicle industry supplier plans on hiring about 240 people in northern Indiana as it shifts some production from Sweden.

Dometic Corp. will spend at least $9 million on equipment for a factory in Elkhart to make refrigerators, awnings, air conditioners and other products. Company president Douglas Whyte says the factory could start production in November.

The Elkhart City Council on Monday approved a 10-year property tax phase-in as part of an incentive package for the company.

Whyte says Dometic already has about 60 employees in Elkhart working in warehousing, customer service and human resources.

Elkhart County has been hit with thousands of layoffs in the recreational vehicle industry and had an unemployment rate of 16.8 percent in June.
