Oklahoma Steel Plant Eyed For Closing

Gerdau Ameristeel Corp. said in a news release Monday it may shut down the Sheffield Steel plant because of the economy.

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. (AP) -- The parent company of a Sand Springs steel mill is talking with the United Steel Workers union about possibly closing the plant.

Tampa, Fla.-based Gerdau (ger-DOW') Ameristeel Corp. said in a news release Monday it may shut down the Sheffield Steel plant because of the economy. Gerdau also says it's closing a mill in Perth Amboy, N.J., and suspending production at a mill in Sayreville, N.J.

Gerdau spokesman Santiago Fittipaldi said the company has just started talking about possibly closing the Sand Springs plant and has no timetable for a decision.

He says the company does not release the number of workers it has at its plants.

Sand Springs city manager Douglas Enevoldsen says he'll work with the company and state and local officials in an effort to keep the plant open.
