Harris Buying N.Y. Manufacturing Site

Defense contractor said it plans to consolidate its radio manufacturing operations into a single new facility near the headquarters of its RF Communications division.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- Defense contractor Harris Corp. said Monday it plans to consolidate its radio manufacturing operations into a single new facility near the headquarters of its RF Communications division.

Harris plans to buy a 573,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Henrietta, N.Y., from Xerox Corp. It didn't reveal how much it will pay.

The company will move about 1,200 people from RF Communications into the new facility in the summer of 2011. Xerox plans to vacate the building Sept. 30 and relocate 1,140 employees to other facilities.

Dana Mehnert, group president of RF Communications, said the plan will bring together manufacturing operations that are currently housed at four different sites.

Harris RF Communications, which is based in Rochester, supplies sercure radio communications to the U.S. and international military as well as local public safety agencies.

Harris Corp. is based in Melbourne, Fla.
