Severstal To Boost Production At Ohio, W.Va. Mills

Russian-owned steelmaker will restart its plant in Warren, Ohio, soon and bring its coke plant in Follansbee, W. Va., to full production by end of January.

WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) -- Severstal North America will restart its plant in Warren, Ohio, soon and bring its Mountain State Carbon coke plant in Follansbee to full production by the end of January.

The Russian-owned steelmaker announced Monday the Warren plant will restart its blast furnace, steelmaking and hot strip mill operations late in the first quarter.

The number of employees returning to work is under discussion with the United Steelworkers, which is negotiating a new contract to cover all North American facilities.

Several operations were idled or reduced last year because of weak demand. Severstal says the market remains fragile, but it's committed to North America.

The cold rolling mill in Wheeling returned to service in December.
