Sonoco Expanding In South Carolina

Packaging company Sonoco Products Co. said Monday it will expand its manufacturing in South Carolina to include a semi-chemical corrugating medium as of Jan. 1.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Packaging company Sonoco Products Co. said Monday it will expand its manufacturing in South Carolina to include a semi-chemical corrugating medium as of Jan. 1.

Sonoco has been manufacturing medium paperboard in Hartsville, S.C., since 1957.

Jim Bowen, senior vice president of the primary materials group, said Sonoco Products has offered its 170,000-ton annual capacity through contract relationships, and the company now believes the market is ready for a producer in the Southeast and "we're excited about our opportunity to take on that role."

Shares rose 13 cents to $27.97 in morning trading.
