Sonoco Shutting Down Specialty Paper Machine

Packaging products maker shutting down a specialty paper machine at its Holyoke, Mass., plant and eliminating 20 jobs.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Sonoco Products Co., which makes packaging products for consumer goods, said Friday it is shutting down a specialty paper machine at its Holyoke, Mass., plant.

The company said the market for the products the machine makes is shrinking. It also blamed higher raw material and energy costs.

The shutdown, scheduled for June 27, will eliminate 20 jobs at the plant, which will remain in operation. The idled machine makes about 30 tons of paper a day that is used in book covers and novelty tickets.

The company did not say how much it expects the move to save in operating expenses.
