Furniture Maker To Consolidate Operations

Berkline/BenchCraft is planning to consolidate all its upholstery manufacturing operations at its facilities in Morristown to reduce operating costs.

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (AP) -- Furniture maker Berkline/BenchCraft LLC is planning to consolidate all its upholstery manufacturing operations at its facilities in Morristown.

President and CEO Bill Wittenberg said Thursday the consolidation will allow the company to reduce operating costs. The Citizen Tribune newspaper reported that more than 200 employees will be added in Morristown, where the company is based.

Wittenberg did not say if those will be jobs are being transferred from other plants or are new employees.

Berkline laid off some 400 workers at its upholstered furniture plant in Mississippi earlier this week.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel newspaper also reported that Berkline was closing its plant in Loudon County, Tenn., which would put another 40 people out of work by April 30.
