Hormel To Build New Microwave Meals Production Facility

About 180 new jobs will be created initially when construction of an $89 million microwave meals production facility in Dubuque, Iowa is completed.

AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) — Turkey and pork processor Hormel Foods Corp. said Wednesday it will start construction on an $89 million new production facility in Dubuque, Iowa, this year.
The facility will be operated by a unit of Hormel and produce microwave meals.

''Consumer demand for shelf stable microwave meals is exploding. This investment will allow us to increase our production capacity and continue our leadership position through innovation and new products,'' said Jeffrey M. Ettinger, chairman, president and chief executive.

Hormel said Dubuque's proximity to its main grocery products distribution center was an important logistical consideration.

Groundbreaking for the 327,000 square-foot facility is scheduled for early summer, and the plant is expected to be operational by November 2009. The deal is subject to finalizing state and local incentives. About 180 new jobs will be created initially, with more expected in future phases.
