Smith & Nephew Recalls Knee Implants

Precautionary recall of some knee implants announced because a number of semifinished knee implant castings have higher-than-specified iron content.

LONDON (AP) — Smith & Nephew PLC, a global medical technology business, announced a precautionary recall of some knee implants Tuesday.

A number of semifinished knee implant castings have a higher-than-specified iron content. These castings were manufactured during May and June on behalf of the company's subsidiary, Plus Orthopedics.

''The finished products have been supplied mainly to customers in Europe, with some to the U.S. and other countries,'' the company said in a statement. ''All affected products are now being recalled as a precautionary measure.''

Of the affected products, about 275 have been implanted, and the recall process is working to determine the status of approximately 300 additional implants.

The shares dipped 1.9 percent to 563 pence (US$11.63; euro7.83) on the London Stock Exchange.
