Cambrex Fined In Iowa Plant Explosion

Pharmaceutical company has been fined over $6,000 for safety violations after a fire and explosion at its plant in Charles City last fall.

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa has fined pharmaceutical company Cambrex Corp. over $6,000 for safety violations after a fire and explosion at its plant in Charles City last fall.

One worker was seriously burned and five others were treated for smoke inhalation.

The Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Bureau issued two citations in the company's response after the fire on Oct. 26, 2007.

The agency determined there was insufficient training of employees in the cleanup and inadequate notification and documentation of possible hazards for visiting outside representatives.

Since the accident, the company says it has completed training of all operations personnel in emergency and post-emergency response.
