Goodyear, Bridestone Firestone Plants Receive Grants

North Carolina awarded the two tire manufacturers a maximum of $30 million in grants each to upgrade their operations and keep existing jobs at the plant.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Two tire companies with large plants in eastern North Carolina have received financial incentives to upgrade their operations and keep existing jobs at the plant.

A state economic incentives panel agreed Wednesday to award a maximum of $30 million in grants each to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in Fayetteville and Bridgestone Firestone plant in Wilson.

The grants come one year after the Legislature approved a bill during a special session that created a package of financial incentives aimed at keeping the two plants operating.

The grants would be allocated over a 10-year period. The companies couldn't get all the state money offered unless they met minimum investment and employment requirements.

Both plants currently employ more than 4,000 workers.
