Zinc Plant Coming To Abandoned Delaware Site

New zinc plating plant is in the River Road Industrial Park, former home to the Amoco Polymer plant, which exploded and burned in the 1980s.

NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) -- An abandoned industrial site south of New Castle is coming back to life.

Local dignitaries joined representatives of Voight and Schweitzer Thursday for a ceremony marking the start of construction of the company's new zinc plating plant in the River Road Industrial Park.

The location is the site of what was Amoco Polymer plant, which exploded and burned in the 1980s. Site remediation was approved in 2005.

The plant is scheduled to open later this year and will eventually employ about 60 people.
