Mercury Marine To Pay $25,000 EPA Fine

Penalty is the result of an incident last year in which the company smelted a basket of off-grade aluminum, causing a 'non-clean charge' in its furnaces, says the Brunswick Corp. subsidiary.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- Mercury Marine will pay $25,000 to resolve alleged violations of federal clean air regulations.

Mercury Marine spokesman Steve Fleming says the penalty is the result of an incident last year in which the company smelted a basket of off-grade aluminum causing what he calls a ''non-clean charge'' in its furnaces.

Fleming says the company discovered the error during its own internal audit and reported it to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Mercury Marine is a division of the Brunswick Corp.
