Hallmark Cards Closing Kansas Plant

Leavenworth manufacturing plant made gift wrap and party supplies for almost 50 years; 150 employees moving to larger Leavenworth facility.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Hallmark Cards Inc. said Wednesday it plans to close a Leavenworth, Kan., manufacturing plant where it has made gift wrap and party supplies for almost 50 years.

The plant's 150 employees will be transferred to Hallmark's other, larger plant in Leavenworth, said company spokeswoman Julie O'Dell.

The so-called Eisenhower Road plant, which also makes gift wrap and partyware, employs 300 people.
''It's all about efficiency and flexibility,'' O'Dell said. ''We've got capacity at Eisenhower Road, so it makes sense to consolidate.''

The smaller facility was opened in 1959, O'Dell said, adding that the company plans to put the 255,000-square-foot building on the market once the transfer is complete.
