GM Planning Reduction At Fairfax, Kansas Plant

Company is still in talks with UAW on workforce impact.

General Motors is planning a reduction at a Fairfax, Kansas assembly plant, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

Tom Wickham of GM said that the reduction is planned for May 7, with a “down week” prior to that.

Wickham said the company is in talks with the local United Auto Workers union (UAW) to determine how staffing will be impacted. No number for layoffs was released by the company and Wickham said there is no timeframe when talks are expected to end, as the reduction is still several months away.

The Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura are produced at the Fairfax plant.

According to Wickham, the company has noted “softness with Malibu sales” and the plant will be producing a new version of the Malibu later this year.
