OSI Unit Opens Facility To Manufacture Security Screening Systems

Mississippi plant will produce system to detect metallic and nonmetallic devices.

Rapiscan Systems, a unit of OSI Systems, said Friday it opened a new factory in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, that will manufacture non-intrusive personnel screening systems designed to detect metallic and nonmetallic objects.

The facility will manufacture multiple Rapiscan Secure 1000 and Rapiscan Gamma Radiographic Detection Systems (GaRDS) systems per year to be deployed both in the United States and around the world.

The Secure 1000 enables security personnel to detect ceramic, plastic, metallic, liquid, organic, and other contraband or security threats. The system provides a comprehensive body search in seconds, which could eliminate the need for hands-on body searches by security personnel.

The Rapiscan GaRDS system detects hidden contraband, including weapons, explosives, weapons of mass destruction, drugs and undeclared goods. The systems have an intrinsically lower radiation field when compared to equivalent X-ray systems. They require a smaller operational area and exclusion safety zone than other inspection systems and are the most commonly used cargo and vehicle inspection technology in the world, the company said.
