GM Plans $225 Million Investment For Tennessee Plant

Plant will be idle beginning in April 2007.

General Motors said it will invest $225 million in its Spring Hill Tennessee manufacturing complex for paint shop renovations in preparation for future vehicle production.

“This project is instrumental to GM’s efforts to strengthen its core manufacturing capabilities in the United States and also demonstrates the value GM places on working together with our UAW partners to improve our manufacturing operations.” said Tim Lee, GM vice president for Manufacturing and Labor Relations.

The Spring Hill plant, which began production in July 1990, produces the Saturn ION and the Saturn VUE. Production of both the ION and VUE will cease in March 2007.

Starting in April 2007, the plant will be idled for several months during the renovations. GM has not yet determined when operations will restart.

The Spring Hill plant has about 3,500 UAW-represented workers and 230 salaried team members.
