BMW Recalls 1.4 Million Cars Due To Fire Risk

Reports indicate that the affected vehicles are at risk of catching fire under the hood even when not in use.

German automaker BMW has issued two different recalls of more than 1.4 million cars and SUVs in the U.S. According to a report from the New York Times, the affected vehicles are at risk of catching fire under the hood even when not in use.

The larger of the two recalls spans 740,000 vehicles, “including the 2008-2011 128i and various other 2007-2011 models with six-cylinder engines, such as the 328i and the 525i.”

Documents from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that a heater for the positive crankcase valve can overheat and cause it to melt, thus increasing the risk of catching fire.

The second recall covers almost 673,000 vehicles, including several BMW 3 Series models from 2006-2011. In this batch of recalled cars, faulty wiring in the heating and air conditioning system can overheat and ignite.

The New York Times reports that there is also some overlap between the Series 3 model recalls.

To date, four drivers have reported injuries, all of which stemmed from faulty wiring issues related to the smaller recall.

For both recalls, BMW expects repairs to start on December 18.
