Wells' Dairy Workers Reject Labor Deal

Blue Bunny ice cream maker struck a tentative agreement with an employee bargaining group, but workers rejected the deal that would cut their pay and perks by $5 million.

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) — Wells' Dairy workers have rejected a labor agreement to cut their pay and perks by $5 million.

The Le Mars-based company, the maker of Blue Bunny ice cream, had struck a tentative deal with an employee bargaining group last week to amend the current three-year contract.

However, the company says workers on Monday and Tuesday voted 675-524 against ratifying the agreement.

The labor pact, set to expire Dec. 31, covers more than 1,500 hourly workers at two ice cream plants, a freezer and a warehouse in Le Mars.

Well's Dairy had asked workers for the cuts to help control costs.
