SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. said Tuesday it has decided to keep open a manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania that it had slated for closing two years ago.
Management said it now wants to keep the wafer fabrication site in Mountain Top, Pa., open because it has seen sales of high voltage and automotive products more than double over the past two years. The products that the plant produces support the types of devices that are seeing improved sales, Fairchild said.
"The strong growth of the product lines supported by the dedicated employees at our Mountain Top facility enabled us to make today's announcement," Mark Thompson, Fairchild's president, chairman and CEO, said Tuesday.
The Mountain Top plant has been manufacturing electronic components for over 50 years. It now employs more than 220 people.
Shares in Fairchild Semiconductor, which is based in San Jose, ended the regular session up 15 cents at $14.38.
