WASHINGTON (AP) -- Global chip sales totaled $24.7 billion in June, down 1.2 percent from $25 billion in May and down 0.4 percent from 24.8 billion in June of last year, according to the industry's leading trade group.
The Semiconductor Industry Association said second-quarter chip sales came in 2 percent below first-quarter levels, but sales in the first half of the year were 3.7 percent higher than sales in the first half of 2010, which saw "record-breaking growth." Overall chip sales are on track to meet growth projections of 5.4 percent for 2011, the trade group said.
The group said gains driven by corporate PC upgrades, smartphone demand, increased investment in information technology infrastructure and growth in China were offset by slower consumer demand in June.
So far this year, all regions have experienced growth over last year's levels, except Japan as it continues to recover from the recent earthquake and tsunami, the Semiconductor Industry Association said. It added that the industry is seeing growth across all markets, especially in the automotive sector.
Members of the Semiconductor Industry Association include Intel Corp., Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Texas Instruments Inc. and International Business Machines Corp.
