Toshiba Expanding Low-Cost LCD TV Sales In India

Toshiba Corp. plans to market low-cost LCD TVs in India, aiming to sell 1.8 million units and secure a 15 percent share of the Indian market by 2013.

MUMBAI, India (Kyodo) -- Japanese electronics maker Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it plans to market low-cost liquid crystal display televisions in India, aiming to sell 1.8 million units and secure a 15 percent share of the Indian market by 2013.

Toshiba plans to localize digital TV production in India in a bid to gain an edge in the highly competitive market, with a 19-inch LCD TV set priced as low as 10,000 rupees (18,000 yen).

Toshiba is setting up a research and development center in Gurgaon in the northern Indian state of Haryana to develop customized products for the local market, the company's Indian subsidiary said in a press release.

Toshiba also said it plans to boost PC sales in India, aiming to sell 650,000 personal computers a year in India by 2013 and capture a 10 percent market share.

As part of its business strategy, Toshiba plans to increase the number of Toshiba TV and PC stores in India to 6,000 by March 2012 from 3,500 stores at present.
