GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) -- Chip maker RF Micro Devices Inc. said Wednesday that Samsung has placed the first volume orders for PowerSmart platforms used in cell phones and tablets.
The manufacturer of chips for wireless communications devices said the orders will support a "highly anticipated" family of smart phone and tablet products. A statement by RF Micro didn't disclose the size of the order or its value.
RF Micro spokesman Doug Delieto said the first Samsung devices using PowerSmart are likely to be launched on Feb. 14.
Eric Creviston, president of the company's cellular products group, said in a statement that the platforms deliver cell phone coverage in all modulation setups including 2G, 3G and 4G, up to LTE 64QAM. The company said it expects to start shipping the platforms this quarter.
Shares of RF Micro, based in Greensboro, N.C., fell 66 cents, or 8.7 percent, to $6.99 in Wednesday morning trading.
