Chip Sales Grow 20 Percent In October

Worldwide sales of semiconductors grew 20 percent year-over-year to $26.3 billion but were flat from September, an industry group said.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Worldwide sales of semiconductors grew 20 percent year-over-year in October to $26.3 billion but were flat from September, an industry group said on Friday.

"As expected, we are experiencing moderation in sequential sales growth rates in line with seasonal patterns, a trend that will likely continue through year-end," Semiconductor Industry Association President Brian Toohey said in a statement, adding that growth will likely be driven by demand in developing markets as the use of mobile devices and consumer electronics continues to spread.

By region, chip sales in the Americas grew 31 percent year-over-year to $3.68 billion, while sales in the Asia Pacific region jumped 19 percent to $11.73 billion. Sequentially, chip sales were flat in the Americas and declined about 1 percent in Asia.

The SIA said sales for the first 10 months of the year rose to $248.2 billion from $181.2 billion for the same period in 2009.

In midday trading, shares of major chipmakers Intel Corp. dipped 3 cents to $21.67, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. rose 2 cents to $7.56 and shares of Texas Instruments Inc. were down 3 cents to $32.82.
