ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) -- Dell Inc. said Wednesday that it will buy InSite One Inc., whose website stores medical records, in a bid to enhance its own archiving service. Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
InSite One, based in Wallingford, Conn., is different from other medical archiving services in that it stores not just data, but a rich library of medical images. Like its competitors it promises medical centers they will save money in the long run by hosting this large catalog of information off site, on InSite One's distant servers.
Dell hopes that adding diagnostic images and other visuals to its library of content will make its own service, Unified Clinical Archive, more useful.
"Our customers have told us that managing the growing demands of both digital images and patient records is one of their greatest concerns," said James Coffin, Ph.D., vice president of Dell healthcare and life sciences, in a statement.
But Dell also said InSite One's model, which stores information and photo libraries alike, could be useful to businesses outside the healthcare industry. As it is, InSite One brings more than 800 medical customers and manages almost 55 million clinical studies and more than 3.6 million medical images.
Shares of the Round Rock, Texas company rose a penny to $13.85 in midday trading.
