S.D. Wants Electronics Recycling Added Into Bids

South Dakota’s waste management program would like computer manufacturers and distributors to start quoting the cost for taking back discarded electronics equipment into their bids.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- The state's waste management program would like computer manufacturers and distributors to start quoting the cost for taking-back discarded electronics equipment into their bids.

The take-back option is proposed in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources' annual recycling report.

Waste management program administrator Vonni Kallemeyn says such an option would shift the responsibility of disposing of the replaced computers from the state onto sellers.

Agencies might want the old computers to give to people who wouldn't otherwise have them, but the state should have the ability in bids and purchase agreements to do the exchange if disposal is needed.
